Chapter 21: Radical Liberal Convention

Chapter 21
Radical Liberal Convention

Insurgents Capture Idaho, read the Washington Post Headline. The eyes of the Governor of New York skimmed the paper. “Ha! Insurgents? Is that the label they are giving to California?” Reed Frost said aloud to himself. “I guess it does make sense. The South still identifies with that rebel mentality, so they wouldn’t want to give California the rebel mantra. But insurgents? Really? I don’t think I’ve heard that term since the early years of the 2000’s.” The New Yorker kept reading.
“The US government officially concedes that Idaho is now under the control of the California insurgency. Top generals operating in the West did not wish to confirm the loss after reports first came out of Sacramento, but were forced to do so today after more and more information was leaked to the media and citizens back home. ‘This is a sad day for the State of Idaho’ said Idaho US Senator Greg Wash. ‘Idaho is now under the control of the insurrection. I continue to vow to fight for the return of Idaho to the US. I will continue to be the voice of the Idaho people here in Washington. We have not forgotten you. Our hearts and prayers are with the citizens and families of Idaho.’”
Governor Frost put his paper down and turned to his computer. There he pulled up the website for the Sacramento Bee which has a headline that read, Idaho Under Military Rule. He clicked on the headline and read the article. “President Stanton has released a formal statement after the conquest of Idaho. ‘Today, the US has conceded that we, California, have control over Idaho. Work is currently underway for establishing a government for the Idaho occupied territory. The Assembly will discuss and decide the future of the territory in accordance with the Constitution. I am here today though to announce that temporarily, the Occupied Territory of Idaho will be under military rule and martial law. The military will serve has the temporary state-level government of the territory. I have named General Torrance Grant of the Washington Army to serve as the Protector-General of the territory. He will oversee the governance of Idaho alongside his military council. The council will be composed of his own appointees which will then be confirmed by the Council of Governors. This is the first day and first step for Idaho towards their liberation. Thank you and God Bless California.’ The President did not answer questions after the statement and General Grant could not be reached by reporters. Many are wondering how military rule will affect the progress…”
“Wow! Military rule? Martial law? I knew that Stanton was firm in his beliefs, but I never thought he would go that far. I wasn’t sure about how hardline he was. But I guess this is one way to make a statement about not being a pushover. If the US wants a fight, Stanton is the man to give him one.”
“Excuse me sir. You have a call.” His secretary told him over an intercom.
“Thank you Donna.” The Governor picked up the phone. “Hello?”
“Mr. Governor, this is Sean Hastings, California Ambassador to Canada.”
            “Hello Mr. Hastings.”
            “Is the line secure?”
“Of course. Had it double checked when your state chose to seceded. You guys caused quite a scare over here in the East.”
“I have no doubt about it. I have been able to see much of it from our new offices here in Ottawa.”
“I imagine that you have not just called to exchange pleasantries.”
“You would be right. I wanted to talk to you about a situation that might interest both of our parties.”
            “I’m listening.”
            …
“Yes I’m well aware of that.”
            …
            “I would imagine so.”
            …
            “You want to do what?”
            …
“That is nuts. I don’t think I can use my party to cause a smokescreen for you and yours.”
            …
“I see. Yes that has been a discussion point.”
            …
“Yes. I will confirm that rumor. It will be discussed formally soon.”
            …
“While I don’t agree with how you are handling it, I do agree with the concept. Next week I will back your plan. It will begin at the Radical Liberal Convention.
